Minutes of ILC Meetings

Timing and location of World Congresses for Microcirculation:

4th WC Tokyo 1987
Dr. Ryan had received a majority of letters supporting a 5 year schedule. It was accepted, however, that it would be reasonable to retain flexibility and include a four year term to avoid clashing with European Society meetings except when Congresses are held in Europe.

The European Society requested that the meeting should be held in 1991 four years from now, rather than 1992 in order to avoid clashing with the European Society meeting in 1992. Dr. Harris said that he was agreeable to this but would be circulating a questionnaire concerning a number of matters related to the Congress, including the dates. It was further agreed that the 6th World Congress would be held in Europe in association with the European Society Meeting in 1996. The European Society were unanimous in proposing West Germany.
The meeting was held in Munich in 1996.

5th WC Louisville 1991
Mike Perry tabled a proposal that Sydney should host the World Congress in the year 2001.
The meeting was held in Sydney in 2001.

6th WC Munich 1996
Professor Lewis reviewed the history of the World Congresses and reminded the Committee that in 1991, in Louisville, it had been determined to hold World Congresses at a five-yearly interval, altemating between an American meeting, a European meeting and an Asian/Australian meeting. The decision to hold the meeting in the year 2001, in Sydney, had been confirmed prior to the Munich meeting. The next projected meeting in 2006 would therefore be in the Americas.

ESM Congress, Paris 1998
Proposal to hold the World Congress in Washington/DC in 2005.
Professor Lewis informed the Committee that a proposal had been developed to hold the World Congress after Sydney in Washington/DC in the year 2005.
Due to timing and organisational conditions, the meeting is held in Milwaukee/Wisconsin in 2007.

7th WC Sydney 2001
The Community then considered presentations by Professor Eric Vicaut on behalf of the French Microcirculation Society and Eli Keshet representing Professor Saul Yedgar on behalf of the Israeli Microcirculation Society to host the 9th World Congress.
The conference is scheduled for Paris in 2010.

ESM Congress, Amsterdam 2006
It was also agreed that the term of chairpersons should cover two World Conferences for Microcirculation. Thus, the next election of a chairperson should be planned for the meeting of the International Liaison Committee for Microcirculation at the 9th World Conference for Microcirculation in Paris in 2010. The decision about location and organization of the 10th World Conference for Microcirculation should be taken at the occasion of the 8th World Conference for Microcirculation in Milwaukee in 2007. This conference should be organized in the year 2015 if held outside Europe and in the year 2014 if held within Europe. According to the usual "rhythm" of world congresses, the Asian-Pacific region would be the obvious candidate to host the 10th WCM 2015 after having had world congresses in the USA and in Europe.

To sum up in the words of our previous Treasurer:

  • The scheme is America's, Europe and Australasia with a five, 4 and five year interval.
  • By default, the world congress meetings in the America's and Australasia will be in odd years whereas the European meetings are in even years.
  • Only in case of an alteration of the order, a change should be adopted.
